A new circular bus service has been announced in Witney after three "vital" services were axed by Oxfordshire County Council.

Witney Town Council has pumped £10,000 towards a town centre bus which will serve Madley Park, Smiths and Cogges estates.

The existing Stagecoach 213, 214 and 215 services in the town are due to terminate from July 20 following the withdrawal of county council subsidies announced last month.

The move came following responses to the cuts from Witney Bus User campaign group and other public transport users.

The town council said it was the first step in a process to seek partnerships with local organisations and businesses to see what level of support and collaboration can be achieved.

Councillor Suzanna Bartington, chair of the public transportation working party, said: "I am delighted that councillors have responded to the concerns of Witney Bus Users and pledged funding to support a future Town Centre circular bus service.

"Provision of an effective and reliable service is vital for our most vulnerable residents, particularly those who have limited mobility.

"We hope that both existing and new passengers will support the service and recognise the wider benefits of public transport for reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality."
