CARE home residents in Wantage are whipping, stirring and icing as they get set to embrace a special nationwide event.

The team and residents at Wantage Nursing Home are hosting a string of baking sessions this week in preparation for their pending Silver Sunday celebration in October.

With Wantage’s event taking place on Sunday, October 2, between 2pm and 4pm, Silver Sunday is a national day celebrating older people and battling isolation.

Wendy Simmons, 72, who decorated her cupcakes with sugary silver and pink balls, said: "I love the sugary toppings."

Daphne Hallett, 86, added: "I loved eating them, they were delicious."

Also honouring the foundation’s official flower, residents have been turning their hand to arts and crafts, creating beautiful orchid-themed decorations and accessories.

From bunting to broaches, the Garston Way home will be a vision of pink and purple when the special day arrives.

Beryl Wake, 94, said: "The colours are lovely, I really adore flowers and I’ve even decorated my bedroom with orchids."

The home’s activities assistant Wendy Pill added: "Our residents are really enjoying all the run-up sessions to Silvery Sunday, its helping to create a lovely excitable buzz in the home which is fantastic as it’s all about celebrating older people."
