MARVIN Johnson says the warm welcome from Oxford United supporters since his arrival last month has made it easier to settle in.

The winger is set to make his fourth appearance for the club today when Charlton Athletic visit the Kassam Stadium.

It is only three weeks since Johnson made his debut following a stressful move from Motherwell on transfer deadline day.

United spent a six-figure fee on the 25-year-old, but the enthusiastic backing he has received from the start has been a big help when getting up to speed.

He said: “In my first game I was sat on the bench when my name got read out and the reaction the fans gave was amazing considering 90 per cent of them hadn’t seen me before.

“It was good to have them behind me straight away, so when I got on all I could think of was giving them something back.

“You don’t want to go to a club where no-one knows anything about you and they wonder if you’re good enough.

“When you have that backing it shows the fans have confidence in you before you even touch a ball for them.

“It helps you settle in well, you don’t have to worry about whether the fans will like you or not.”

The one slight disappointment so far is a lack of goals.

Johnson has had good chances late on in both his appearances at home, including shooting wide against Swindon Town when Chris Maguire was poised to complete his hat-trick.

It is something he would love to put right against Charlton this afternoon.

He said: “I should have had two goals by now.

“I’m making the runs and getting in the right areas to make those chances, so I’m sure more will come and I will score goals.

“I’ve had quite a bit of stick from Maguire about that.

“I didn’t realise anyone had come up with me, otherwise I would’ve passed. I enjoy setting up goals as much as scoring.”

Kane Hemmings could start if Wes Thomas has not fully recovered from a calf strain, while there is a slight doubt over Joe Rothwell (ankle).

Charlton are expected to welcome back key duo Ricky Holmes and Lee Novak following back and stomach problems respectively.
